Skills bootcamps and funded training courses

These courses are short, hands on and usually free to you. Plenty of the government funded skills bootcamps finish with a guaranteed interview, so you come out with a next step rather than just a certificate.

What a skills bootcamp involves

Skills bootcamps are flexible courses of up to sixteen weeks, designed with employers around a specific skill shortage: software development, data, digital marketing, construction, engineering, logistics and green skills are common.

They are free for eligible adults aged 19 and over, and providers must offer an interview with an employer on completion.

Who can take one

Eligibility usually means being 19 or over, living in England, and either employed, self-employed, unemployed or returning to work. Some bootcamps are restricted to a particular region because of how they are funded.

If you are claiming benefits, check with your work coach first. Most bootcamps are compatible with Universal Credit, but the hours need to be agreed.

Is a bootcamp right for you?

They suit people who can commit to intensive study for a short period and who want to change direction quickly. They are less suitable if you need to earn while you learn, in which case an apprenticeship is usually the better route.

What a strong answer looks like

Real examples you can borrow the shape of. Do not copy them word for word, employers read hundreds of applications and they can tell.

Why do you want to do this bootcamp?

I have been doing warehouse shifts for two years and I taught myself the basics of spreadsheets to sort our stock counts, which cut the time we spent recounting. I want to do the data bootcamp because I already enjoy that part of my job and I want to be qualified to do it full time. I can commit to the full sixteen weeks because my shifts are fixed in the evenings.

Why it works: It shows a real reason, a bit of proof you already like the work, and that you have thought about whether you can actually turn up.

What will you do after the course?

I want a junior data role, ideally in logistics because I know how the industry works. I know the bootcamp guarantees an interview, so I will use the course projects as my portfolio and apply for other junior roles at the same time rather than waiting for one interview.

Why it works: Providers want people who will get hired. Naming a target role and a backup plan shows you are serious.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Applying for a bootcamp you cannot attend

Check the hours before you apply. Most run full time for weeks. If you need to earn while you learn, an apprenticeship is the better route.

  • Saying you want to 'get into tech'

Name the job you want at the end. Junior developer, data analyst, digital marketing assistant. It makes your answer sound like a plan.

  • Not checking the funding rules

Most funded bootcamps need you to be 19 or over and living in the right region. Read the eligibility on the listing before you spend time on the form.

  • Treating the guaranteed interview as a guaranteed job

It is one interview. Keep applying elsewhere during the course and build a small portfolio you can show.

  • Not telling your work coach

If you claim Universal Credit, agree the hours first so your claim is not affected.

Common questions

Are skills bootcamps free?
Government-funded skills bootcamps are free for eligible adults aged 19 and over in England. Employers who send existing staff contribute towards the cost. Privately run bootcamps charge fees, so always check before you enrol.
Do bootcamps guarantee a job?
They guarantee an interview, not a job. Funded skills bootcamps must offer a job interview with an employer on completion, which is a real advantage, but you still have to pass the interview.
Can I do a bootcamp while claiming Universal Credit?
Usually yes. Skills bootcamps are generally treated as approved training, but agree the hours with your work coach before you start so your claim is not affected.
